Delivering Net-zero Carbon Emissions

The UK government has set a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 which in now enshrined into law. This raises the ambition of the previous target of an 80% reduction and will require big changes in the way we use energy, as well as an accelerated take up of new technologies to support decarbonisation. UK CO2 is Down 37% from 1990 – but More is Needed

On 5 February, the Office of National Statistics published final figures on the UK’s 1990-2017 greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions have declined 37% from their 1990 levels – the fastest decline in emissions in any developed country. (more…)

Decision on Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting

The government has confirmed the framework for the new Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), scheduled to commence in April 2019. SECR replaces the reporting element of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, which ends next year. However, it will cover approximately 11,300 companies compared to just 4,000 that currently have to comply with the CRC. (more…)

City Corporation Commits to 100% Renewable

The City of London Corporation has announced plans to source 100% renewable electricity from October 2018 onwards. This goal is to be achieved through a combination of generating electricity on the buildings it owns, investing in off-site green energy, and buying green electricity already available on the market.  (more…)

Emissions Reduce Overall but Upward Trend in the Transport Sector

Official figures show that greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the EU decreased by 0.4% in 2016, despite an increase in transport emissions for the third consecutive year. The report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) shows that the slight cut in emissions was achieved due to a reduction in the use of coal for both heat and power generation. (more…)
